Expand your musical horizons at the new Kiwigrass Academy – two days of in-depth tuition and participation leading in to the 2019 Kiwigrass Festival.
This is a unique opportunity to absorb the knowledge and experience of top international players from The Lonely Heartstring band (USA), Australia’s Bluegrass Parkway band, and the extraordinary Kiwi guitarist Mark Mazengarb.
The Kiwigrass Academy is modelled on examples like the RockyGrass Academy, which have proved so successful at the most popular festivals in the United States. For the first time, you can benefit from this level of instruction at a New Zealand festival without shelling out thousands of dollars for airfares.
You don’t have to be an advanced player, everyone will be alongside participants of similar experience. However you will need to have a basic familiarity with your instrument to join the novice stream which will be separate from the other players.
Getting to meet, jam, and perform with other like-minded musicians over two full days will be one of the biggest rewards when you participate in the Kiwigrass Academy.

Kiwigrass is the New Zealand Bluegrass Festival.
Kiwigrass is being organised by a keen group of bluegrass lovers in New Zealand. Their goal is to raise the profile of bluegrass in New Zealand, promote New Zealand based bluegrass musicians to the world, and bring the joy of the American bluegrass festival experience to New Zealand.
We love the idea, and many of our members will be heading down there to take in the line up of great overseas acts, and may even camp a few days earlier to attend The Kiwigrass Academy
Dates: 1-3 February 2019. Kick off Friday evening, wrap up late Sunday afternoon.
Venue: Narrows Park. Hamilton, New Zealand.
Narrows Park is a great venue with good camping and bunk facilities, with lots of space and rooms for jamming an performances.
Expect a party atmosphere on the Friday evening opening of Kiwigrass as headline guests The Lonely Heartstring Band release their new album, Smoke and Ashes.
If you saw them play last year, you might still have their mind-blowing debut album Deep Water on infinite repeat. Still seeing them premier a whole new album will be very very special.
The band says they are very excited to get this music out into the world as they believe it captures the fresh sound that they’ve been working into their performances for the past couple years.
