Bluegrass and Beyond Wed 30 Sept

Bluegrass and Beyond
LTR: John Olding, Colin Spier, Cameron Bennett, and Pete Parnham

Let’s get out again and have some music fun with Bluegrass and Beyond.

You might have seen  Bluegrass and Beyond ripping it up at Cafe One2One, led by John Olding’s fine vocals and guitar, and featuring Colin Spier’s stunning guitar and bluegrass banjo. Cameron Bennett adds dobro to the mix, and Pete Parnham adds bull fiddle.

This band goes beyond bluegrass into the realm of Colin’s tasteful guitar tunes, rejuvenated Beatles tunes, and delves into Cameron’s cupboard of uniquely New Zealand songs, crafted by the wordsmith himself.

It makes for a great, high energy show, and it will be at the convenient Greenhouse just off Ponsonby Road. It’s a great venue set out with cafe style seating, with lots of room for social distancing. The cafe itself will be closed so bring your own drinks and nibbles (and please take your debris with you).

Workshop Jam – August

We are pickers and we love jamming.  Pickers who subscribe to our email newsletter will find out where and where our next workshop jam will be.  To find out for yourself subscribe.

The format is simple: we briefly discuss some aspect of music or jamming technique, then jam. We open this discussion because we want to help pickers improve by swapping tips and having a forum where you can ask questions of other pickers.

This is always informal, fun, no pressure, and a great way to improve your picking and to get to know other club pickers.

Bring an instrument and and if you are up for it, some simple bluegrass style songs that we can jam to.

Bob and Kate

Wed 8 July 2020 7:30pm

Bob Cooper Grundy and Kate Marshall

If you could buy songs in a shop, there would be an old wooden second-hand shop just off state highway 2 in the Wairarapa. Facing the traffic would be a sign written in an curly font. It would read Bob and Kate’s Song Emporium

Those who step inside are richly rewarded with old songs in their original boxes, with others polished to a copper gleam, and still others tastefully restored or updated. Look among the gems and you might find some crafted by Bob and Kate themselves.

This month at the Auckland Bluegrass Club it will be like Bob and Kate are walking you through their song shop — it will be enchanting, curious, exciting, sometimes dusty, sometimes gleaming, and always absorbing.

Don’t be the city slicker who can’t bear to lift their expensive shoe off the accelerator.  Stop by Bob and Kate’s Song Emporium at the Bunker Wednesday 8th July.

Airing songs in the Greenhouse

Wednesday 10 June 7:30pm

All those bluegrass songs you learned/half-learned/intended-to-learn (delete one) during lockdown?

It’s time to give them an airing in front of your bluegrass friends at the June Auckland Bluegrass cub night concert, which this month will be at the Greenhouse so we have plenty of room for social distancing.

This is the plan:

  • The evening will start at 730pm because we want to allow plenty of time for all those pent-up performances – and a jam at the end.
  • Admission will be free to save having to launder the cash.
  • It will be strictly acoustic so we don’t breath in microphone goobies.
  • Each attendee needs to book to make sure you don’t miss out, and to prevent a contact tracing holdup at the door.
  • If you would like to perform, please send us a reply email, so we can organise the evening ahead of time.

This is going to break the big bluegrass log jam, so it will be great to see you there, whether you are a performer or just an acoustic music fan. Thinking ahead, on the first Wednesday in July we will start our jam workshop sessions, where we will workshop some aspect of good jamming skills before launching into a jam. To find out more, make sure you subscribe to our email newsletter.
